As part of the EU India Connectivity partnership, the EU has been collaborating with academic institutions, including IIIT-Hyderabad. The active efforts and collaboration with IIIT-H led to the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for IoT at the institution, which has since benefitted industry, academia and the Indian government in their efforts towards the development of smart cities. The CoE has also been critical in the adoption of a globally recognized oneM2M standard as a national standard in India.
