Theme of the Hackathon: Smart Solutions for a Smart City – Smart City Applications for Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited, the Smart City of Panaji, Goa.
Background: Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited (IPSCDL), the Special Purpose Vehicle of the Government of Goa, mandated for the implementation of the flagship Smart Cities Mission of the Government of India, in Panaji, Goa calls for participation from Smart Citizens (youth of all ages and gender) to be partners in the development process of the Smart City, by developing Smart Solutions to local challenges.
One of the key features of the Smart City as envisioned by the Government of India is the application of Smart Solutions which will involve the use of data and information and innovative application of technology for the provision of better infrastructure and urban services for the improvement of the Quality of Life of citizens. The aim of the Smart Panaji Hackathon is to bring together representatives from the ‘quadruple helix’ and utilise the concept of Open Innovation to address various challenges of urbanisation in the Smart City. This hackathon seeks to showcase the innovation ability of developers in the field of IoT based products and services as applicable for a smart city.
To promote open innovation, the capacity building of the developers’ community is key. Master Classes and Hackathon series is a flagship initiative to enable the developer community and startup community to look at local problems and produce interoperable global solutions. The India EU ICT Standard Collaboration Project promotes collaboration for creation of interoperable standards that provide a good return on investment on tax payers’ money and enabling open innovation.

Choose your Challenge
Choose one challenge area that you want to target.
Smart Environment Challenge
Theme: Water, Air Quality and Pollution Monitoring
The water in a Creek is becoming increasingly polluted due to the discharge of raw sewerage into it. The residents along the water body are highly affected by the water and vector borne disease and the pervasive smell. The authorities are unable to pinpoint the source of pollution to initiate action. How can IoT devises help?
Expected Outcome: A prototype that helps to improve the environment using relevant databases (Water, Air etc).
Smart Mobility Challenge
Theme: Transportation and Mobility
The heritage core of a city is a major centre of local commerce as well as a hub of tourist activities. The narrow streets are becoming increasingly congested due to the traffic and the availability of parking is far lower than the demand. How can the paradigm of IoT help to transform a heritage city suffering under traffic woes and transform it into a Smart City?
Expected Outcome: A prototype that that improves transportation, mobility, parking etc.
Smart Resilience Challenge
Theme: Climate Change and Disaster Management
A costal city is highly vulnerable to climatic shocks including cyclone and rainfall flooding and stresses including coastal flooding and coastal erosion. Resources – Human, Economic, Cultural and Ecological are at risk of disastrous consequences of climate change. How can IoT adapt to and address climate change?
Expected Outcome: A prototype that helps to develop Climate Smart and Resilient Smart City.
Smart Buildings Challenge
Theme: Energy Efficiency in Smart Buildings
Patients at a Hospital complain of discomfort that the night time temperature of the Air Conditioning is too cold. The AC temperature is set at 20 degrees. The hospital then installs an IoT based intelligent energy management system which sensors that collect realtime temperature data and automatically optimises the internal environment to improve occupants comfort by adjusting the Air Conditioning temperature as per the outside temperature. The hospital now consumes less electricity and saves a few lakhs rupees in energy bills. Could there be other similar insights for cost savings that IoT devices can bring in Buildings?
Expected Outcome: A prototype that helps to improve energy efficiency in buildings and helps to make the city energy Smart.
